What Does ‘Off Grid’ Mean To Me?

Whenever I post about anything ‘Off Grid’, especially to do with earning a location independent income, I get a lot of comments along the lines of “that’s not really off grid”.

Some people think that if:

  • You’re running an online business
  • Writing a blog
  • Earning money remotely
  • Have an internet connection

…then you’re not really off grid.

And I suppose there’s a certain technical way that’s true.

If you define ‘the grid’ as the connection to electrical, water, and data systems of society.

That’s fair enough.

But for me, it’s more of an ideal. The goal of being as self sufficient as possible.

Maybe I never fully get there, but it’s a north star.

So if you’re earning money from a blog, that can still be off grid. Ironcially people commenting on off grid internet forums complaining about this are, well, I think a little hypocritical.

I think you can live a little more of the off grid ideals if you’re living in a city apartment. Start by growing a few tomatos and cooking up a delicious home made pasta dish with them.
